Floodplain Agencies and Regulations

Floodplains are regulated at the Federal, State, and local levels. At the Federal level, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regulates floodplains.

In Colorado, the Department of Natural Resources/ Colorado Water Conservation Board regulates floodplains.

Rules and Regulations for Regulatory Floodplains in Colorado

At the local level, floodplains are regulated by municipalities or Counties that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program. The City of Littleton is a participating community in the NFIP. As such, the city is required to develop floodplain regulations. These are contained in the City Code, Title 10, Chapter 7.

The city's floodplains are managed by the Public Works Department/Engineering Division at 303-795-3865.

At the local level, the Denver Metropolitan Area has the Mile High Flood District which assists local communities in managing major drainageways and flooding, by providing technical guidance and flood studies.

The City of Littleton works closely with UDFCD to manage the city's major drainageways, reduce or mitigate flood hazards, identify improvements, and assist with funding of projects. Regular, routine maintenance is performed on major drainageways. Capital improvement projects have been constructed to remove numerous properties from the floodplain.
