Record-breaking rainfall in the spring and summer of 2023 stressed Littleton’s stormwater infrastructure, causing several aging corrugated metal culverts to collapse beneath city roadways, parks and open spaces.

Crews are hard at work replacing failed metal storm sewers with reinforced concrete pipes, which will increase durability and resilience. City engineers are proactively examining other elements of Littleton’s stormwater infrastructure to prevent further issues.

Project Summary

A storm sewer collapsed at Powers Park in the outfall of the detention pond in late Spring 2023.
Small sinkhole noticed in June, but June 22 flooding event washed away fill dirt. Small sinkhole reopened, additional failures observed along pipeline.
Storm sewer has not fully collapsed, but damage observed in multiple spots through line.
City staff monitoring site.
Construction start planned April 2024
Anticipated time for repairs is 2 months.

Detours and Closures

South Huron Street will remain open. However, there will be shoulder closure and parking restrictions on the east side of the street.
Powers Park will remain open, with a designated pathway outside of work area.
